Review by 2MaryBeth3 -- Away To Me, My Love
Away To Me, My Love by Naomi McDonald is a true love story about a woman and her dog. Naomi is a professional horse trainer that stumbles into the sheepdog arena. Though the story is mingled with her emotional past it is a great read about her becoming a shepherd to her sheepdog.
Naomi is a highly qualified horse trainer who competes regularly, but sheep penning is very different. Naomi has flashbacks to her younger years when she saw a sheep penning competition, which keeps drawing her in. Competition sheep penning is a very tight-knit community. She is a quick and very observant learner as she goes through the process of training Luke.
Naomi questions her right to a gifted competition dog. Her emotional issues stem back to her childhood, causing her to judge her actions repeatedly. One particular memory plays a large roll in Naomi's self- worth. The memory is flawed though. She retains the words spoken to her by her father and forgets the actions by her mother and grandmother.
Her unqualified actions cause Luke to be injured which results in her giving Luke to a more experienced trainer. Naomi doesn't share her feeling and turmoil with her husband. He has been very supportive of her endeavors and even financially supported her when they could least afford it. The trainer Luke is given to has learned some hypnosis technics, which helps Naomi learn the truth from her past. I don't understand Karmic beliefs or the Native American's religious practices but they lead Naomi to heal and ultimately keeping Luke throughout his remaining years.
Some believe animals are given with the purpose to guide individuals to their healthier selves. This spiritual guidance and visions play a big roll in helping Naomi understand her past and the emotional turmoil she lived with. I don't know if this is a combination of different types of spiritual awareness or is a normal practiced religion.
I enjoyed reading this true story. I think anyone interested in training a dog would like reading it as well. Anyone dealing with childhood emotional struggles would also benefit from reading it. The one downside of the book was Luke Speaks; where Luke is telling his side to his life and his death. I would have preferred Naomi to finish the story. Naomi inflects all the emotions she has as she goes through the final hours of her beloved friend.
I would give this book a score of 4 out of 4 stars; it was professionally edited with just one or two errors.
