Review by Anthony__ -- Beneath the Muscle by Lauren Powers
Beneath The Muscle by Lauren Powers is a non-fictional book that details the hurdles, life-changing moments, and beliefs of the author. She describes the pains she faced and motivates the readers to keep fighting for their dreams, no matter the challenges. This book is an inspirational guideline to achieving fulfillment in life from the champion’s point of view.
The book contains only 122 pages with a detailed explanation of the life of the heavyweight champion. She was born on the 13th of December 1961 as Laurie D. MacDonald to Mary and David MacDonald, who divorced three years after her birth. She then moved to Los Angeles with her mother to live with her grandparents. Lauren Powers have always been drawn to sports in general and has the drive to lead and stay on top.
After completing her business degree at the University of Hawaii, she managed her own business and excelled excellently. She later got addicted to drugs and alcohol, but then recovered. At 33 years, she becomes a firefighter. Eventually, at 40 years, her career kicked off when she attended a major show in Las Vegas called the Olympia Expo. Since then, she has had different opportunities and gained spotlights both on national and international media. Lauren Powers is a true definition of success because she was never afraid of making mistakes.
This book shows that people can be successful in any field they choose, provided they work hard and keep a positive mindset. It also depicts the harsh reality people encounter in our society for being different. What makes the book an exceptional one is that it inspires the reader to have self-confidence, push beyond limits, and get back on feet no matter how hard they fall.
I admire how the author included her images from her upbringing and the ones when her bodybuilding career was at its climax. Also, the quotes in the book are amazing. My favorite quote is the one in Chapter 3, which states that “To find yourself, think for yourself.”
There is nothing I dislike about this book. I found it motivating and breathtaking. The book is well-written as I did not find any grammatical or punctuation errors in it. The writer was able to captivate my attention, and the choice of words made me experience everything I read, making it seems like I lived her life. Therefore, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who needs the motivation to try something new. This book can wake up your inner strength. So, if you are going through a rough patch, looking to try something new, or confused, then Beneath The Muscle is just the book you need.
