Review of Why Me
Mike’s story is quite an intriguing one. Initially, he had all the ingredients of a “failure.” He failed two grades and dropped out of school after a few years. He was severely dyslexic, and this made reading and writing extremely difficult, if not almost impossible. Also, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which didn’t help matters a bit. With these impediments so early in life, Mike should have never become so successful, at least not when we have daily examples of people giving up so easily. After reading the book, I learned there is a reason why his story is so different and why he had to tell it to the world: Mike has been touched by God and had several extremely powerful and humbling experiences bordering on miracles.
Digging deeper, however, in my opinion, faith is the main ingredient in Mike’s book: pure, honest, and naked faith that things will always work out if one believes. I had a strange feeling reading about his doubts concerning his mission to talk about his Godly experiences. While driving his truck, he came to a traffic light where a billboard had the words saying, “God gave you a message to share. Don’t keep it to yourself.” He recognized this as a sign to continue sharing his miraculous life with the world. Over the years, I had several such synchronicities (albeit non-religious ones), so I could easily feel what the author was going through that day.
The book is written using simple words that do exactly what they are supposed to do: tell a man’s story in order to inspire, strengthen one’s faith, and encourage people never to give up. Bob Ruhe did a very good job disclosing the author’s core values in this manuscript. It was written using such a personal tone and voice that I kept forgetting it was Mike’s co-author who put the words on paper to create the memoir based on Mike's notes and recordings. I didn’t find any significant grammatical errors in the book, so it was professionally edited.
For the wonderful story and the uplifting message, I will give Why Me?: One Man's Journey Experiencing God's Undeserved Gifts and Love4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to readers who enjoy biographies of people who overcame major obstacles in life and to those who are inspired by others’ spiritual experiences. Agnostics and atheists might have some issues with the heavy religious themes in the book and might be skeptical at first of some of the claims described in the biography; however, I suggest they give it a chance and read it with an open mind. By the end of the story, many will change their minds. ****** Why Me View: on Bookshelves | on Amazon
