Official Review: Discipline Strategy
Do you ever feel like you’re aimlessly drifting through life? Do you struggle with achieving your goals? Are you stuck in an unsatisfying lifestyle? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’ll likely benefit from Discipline Strategy, by Timothy L. Coomer, Ph.D. The book introduces a robust framework that can help you establish and achieve any personal or professional goal.
Dr. Coomer is an entrepreneur, researcher, and author who focuses on topics such as personality modeling and life change. This book is the combination of his research, personal and professional experiences, and interactions with friends, colleagues, and clients. You’ll find examples from a variety of sources: the corporate world, the music industry, athletics, etc.
The DISCIPLINE STRATEGY is a ten-step process consisting of four phases: choosing the destination and preparing for the journey, creating a roadmap and beginning the journey, perfecting and intensifying your efforts, and celebrating and nurturing continuous growth and well-being. Each chapter in the book corresponds to a step in the process: D for decide, I for investigate, S for sort, etc.
All of the chapters follow a similar structure. The author gives a general overview of the topic, shows a story based on real-life events to illustrate the point, talks about the challenges associated with the step, and, finally, points to the worksheets that will help the reader implement the strategy in their lives. The book is exceptionally organized; you never feel lost or have the impression the author’s going off on a tangent.
In addition to the book itself, the reader can find extra resources on the author’s website. Besides the worksheets, there’s a very insightful personality assessment that shows your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to formulating and implementing plans.
Instead of the vague, subjective advice we often see in many self-help books, Discipline Strategy features recommendations based on solid facts, research, and real-life experimentation. The author also encourages the reader to think critically and do their own research before making decisions. The only minor issue I have is the lack of a bibliography or suggested reading material at the end of the book. The author does make sure to cite his sources throughout the chapters, but it would've been helpful to have everything in one place.
Discipline Strategy is an excellent self-help book that combines theory and practice to outline a path towards success. Whether you’re struggling academically, looking for a career opportunity or seeking to make a change in your life, you’ll find tools to help you succeed. Since the editing is also exceptional (I only found one minor misspelling), I confidently rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. There are no profanities whatsoever, making the book suitable for any audience. I can’t think of anyone I wouldn’t recommend this to.
