Review by Davinasmith18 -- From Liberty to Magnolia: In ...
What I love about the book is how she outlines her life in a chronological way that allowed me to appreciate her path from magnolia to achieving the American Dream. Although she says “little did I know my love of books would be my ticket out” it is clear that she saw value in hard work, words and books. She said I “believed if I studied, prepared and worked hard enough, I would have the same opportunities as anyone. Her stories touched on a range of experiences, thoughts, emotions and associated actions that I believe can resonate with a diverse group of people. Like myself, I believe some individuals may relate to or have had similar experiences at one time or another. In addition to racial and gender discrimination she raises the issues women may face with sexual harassment and domestic violence.
I found her memories and stories stimulating. Some stories included tragedy, humor, wit, romance, drama and irony. I found it ironic and promising that she chose to write a book to share her story because she stated on several occasions that she “believed in the power of words and their ability to bring about change”. Throughout her life she found solace, friendship and a way to escape in books. In this book I believe she has achieved her goal of using her voice and mastery of words to reach others. I enjoyed the tidbits of wisdom sprinkled throughout the book. She the book was chock full of relevant information including topics of race, gender, education, workplace success, interpersonal relationships, motherhood, financial decisions, success and range of other topics.
One of the most powerful messages she communicated was that by knowing herself, she was she was able to resist and refuse to accept the categories that people tried to assign to her. She refused to let any situation or condition define her and encourages readers to commit to doing their best in whatever situation they find themselves in. What I liked is that she accentuated the idea that the American Dream is unique to each individual. She is living the American Dream because she clearly defined it and established a path to reach her dreams.
I liked everything about this book. There was nothing I did not like, therefore, I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars because it was inspirational and well-written. I recommend this book for young adult and adult readers because her story may spur greatness in others. It is a quick read, simple yet full of valuable insight on how to maneuver the path on the way to achieving your version of the American Dream.
