How to Define Yourself: Taking Control of Your Life.is a book written with an aim of helping the reader to take control of their life just as the book title suggests. The introduction of the book discourages the reader from the norm of blame games and emphasizes the need to always accept the outcomes as a result of their wrong decision. Chuck clearly explains that blaming others is wrong because no one makes choices for anyone, we make our own choices and should take full responsibility for the outcome.
The inclusion of explained terminology used in the book makes it easy to understand. Stimuli refer to an event that happens in your life, while the space of time refers to the variable length of time you choose to respond to various stimuli received. Response refers to the reaction after receiving one or more stimuli.
We are responsible for how we chose to be defined. The response from us to any stimuli received gives us the definition. The more you respond contrary to what is expected of you the more you are defined useless and irrelevant society member hence unreliable person in society. However, you can still formulate how you want to be defined by responsibly responding to stimuli presented to you in any given time. Most people never see good in any situation but instead, choose to criticize every happening without trying to find the good in it. Chuck emphasizes that there is good in everything that happens to us and all we need to do is to find the good and magnify the good.
I never imagined that human interaction can be summarized in less than 100 pages. The simplicity of the book made it very useful and I'm sure it will help anyone who reads it. The use of examples and exercises to further help in the understanding of the process of self-realization was on point, especially where the writer used a glass half-filled with juice. Some people will say the glass is half-full and others will say it's half-empty. Our main focus should be on what we have and not on what we don't have.
The book was well edited and proofread and had no mistakes or errors. It was simple to understand because of the inclusion of examples although the repetition of the examples given at some point was irritating giving me the feeling that I haven't moved a single page. The repetition of examples is the only negative from the book. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.and highly recommend it to be read by everyone. It should also be voted for the book of the year, these will make it available to everyone and will change many minds. The book is suitable for everyone without restrictions either based on religion or belief. I consider this book the best self-help book because of the simple language used.
