Review by Lunastella -- The Chauvinist's Guide to Modern...
This funny, short book explains the basic differences between the genders, the different types of men and women (from nice guys to Catholic girls) and easy, simple techniques to get any kind of woman into your bed.
There are many assets to praise in The Chauvinist’s Guide to Modern Romance by Morris Rollins. It’s a short, easy read that can brighten your mood in a couple of hours, and I believe we often underrate how delightful such brief reads can be. The book contains interspersed hilarious illustrations that bring to life the concepts discussed. My favorite ones were the graphics comparing how male and female brains work.
There’s a saying in my country that can be roughly translated as “truth hides in between jokes” and this book is the perfect embodiment of it. Of course, if the author hadn’t made a thorough observation of society, gender differences, relationships, and interactions, the book wouldn’t be funny and the satire wouldn’t work. In this regard, we should praise Morris Rollins for his sociological observations.
As funny and lighthearted as this book is, we should not forget it’s intended to be a satire. The rise of misogynistic movements that can lead to violence, such as the so-called incel movement, compels me to call for a warning to readers that this is not a literal guide, and most of what is said is intended to be tongue-in-cheek.
The book is professionally edited, and I only found a few minor mistakes. I enjoyed it tremendously. However, if I had to point one flaw, it would be the extremely traditional and binary view of gender and relationships. The author acknowledges two genders only and addresses exclusively heterosexual relationships. With his witty observations, I would love to read a book like this by the same author but with a broader approach.
For its brilliant simplicity, accurate observations, hilarious illustrations, and professional edition, I’m glad to rate The Chauvinist’s Guide to Modern Romance by Morris Rollins 4 out of 4 stars.
The Chauvinist’s Guide to Modern Romance does contain profanity and sexual references, so it calls for a mature audience. I would recommend this book to men, obviously. Especially, heterosexual men because that’s the focus of the book. Anyone who has struggled with the battle of the sexes and is willing to take it humorously will enjoy it. This book could also make an excellent gag gift to male friends and relatives. However, readers that easily take things to heart or staunch feminists might find this text annoying or offensive rather than funny. If you’re looking for an intricate plot or serious character development, this isn’t a read for you, either. Otherwise, have a giggle!
