Why can't Jonny just Quit is an awesome book. It is easy to anyone to capture the idea of the book since the language used is clear and easy to understand. I did not find any spelling or grammar mistakes, this book is well edited. So, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I can say that this book is flawless. Do you have the curiosity to know who is the author?
The author is Kyle Oh,M.D. He is a doctor specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Then he started out as a pain specialist, but over time, he became an addiction specialist as well- not by choice, but out of necessity. He thinks that, if you are treating pain, you better understand addiction, because some of pain patients will become addicted. He understood addiction and ultimately started treating it in large part because one of his patient early in his career became addicted as a result he lost his life. So, Kyle Oh, M.D. felt guilty as he was responsible about him. After that, he started his journey of parsing together the commonalities of patient stories and read as much as he can, by this he was able to make out the forest for trees. However, what still amazes him that many who suffer from this disease do not understand this beast themselves. There are a lot of books about addiction, but why Kyle Oh M.D. wrote this book is different reason.
Kyle Oh, M.D. believes that the only way we can help prevent others from getting hooked is by educating them about why some people get hooked and what the early warning signs are that one may be susceptible to getting hooked in the first place, and he had a number of patients tell him that they should stop their pain started to subside because the pills were starting to make them ''feel too good'' Yes, once one understand why addiction happens and knows the early warning signs that he is susceptible to getting hooked, he can prevent himself from getting hooked. Thus, Kyle Oh, M.D. aimed by this book to redefine addiction in a way that finally makes sense of this often misunderstood subject by making sense of addiction, help those who suffer from this disease learn how to get it under control and by understanding addiction and why it happens to some, help prevent many others from getting hooked in the first place. Personally, I recommended this book for those who suffer from addiction and for those whom parents suffered from addiction since they may be susceptible to getting hooked. Why can't Jonny just Quit has studied addiction in details.
So Why can't Jonny just Quit? This is a question family member asked about their loved ones whom Kyle Oh, M.D. has treated for addiction. This is from where the name f the book came. This book contains seventeen chapters. All of them are informative. Chapter one talked in general whereas the rest are more specific. The most interesting part of the book is the '' cases studies'' since this part is a twenty story of addicted people , how they became addicted and how they be cured. Now let me tell you the information that I get from this book.
For addiction, currently, the medical community diagnoses addiction as a set of behaviors, such as forging prescriptions, doctor shopping, escalation of drug use or multiple DUIs. The author believes that this diagnose and explanation is as if four blind men are describing an elephant from the part they feel. Because behaviors could be because of depression and for some, when the depression is dealt with or psychological wound heals, their behaviors may change, for others, they do not. From the author perspective the truth of addiction is most are not susceptible to most drugs, but a percentage of people are susceptible to different drugs, and for them, these drugs are quite addictive and once they are addicted, the grip of their addiction can be quite strong. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those who argue that anyone can get hooked, and that everyone gets extremely euphoric on these drugs. Therefore, they see addiction not as a disease, but rather a personal choice and failings. Once again, such misconception arises from the failure to understand that most people do not find these drugs highly euphoric. They ask, 'How can this be true? 'they fail to see that. Other people experiences can be quite different from their own. Only when ask others about their experiences with these drugs and hear how others had quite different experiences from their own will they begin to understand. The author think that one of the misconceptions about addiction is that believing high is anything that alters our mind. The reason why we call illicit drugs dope is because most people think that's what these drugs do- make you dopey. Most people associate any altered state of mind as being high. They think that becoming intoxicated or sedated from a drug or feeling mild euphoria is getting high, but this is not what those who got hooked on these drugs are talking about. Those who got hooked often describe their high as a heightened sense of awareness, increased energy, like being ten feet tall, feeling invincible, and most people often describe it as an intense orgasmic experience. This is true, at least at first. Kyle Oh, M.D. claims that media gives us the idea that illicit drugs make the person drunk while the truth is that they stimulate the pleasure spot in the brain as the sex does, but drugs just do it much more quickly and powerfully than sex, at least for those who are susceptible. One misconception about addiction is that abuse is consider as addiction. Abuse is just a behavior and does not explain the reason behind the behavior. Data in the addiction overlap of Kyle Oh, M.D. shows that, although some people may be vulnerable to multiple drugs, most are not vulnerable to all drugs. Yes, once someone gets addicted to one drug, he may try to recapture that initial high by experimenting with other (often more powerful) drugs, but it does not necessarily mean that he will become addicted to all of them. You are only vulnerable to those drugs that make you highly euphoric. Unfortunately, there is no personality trail that predicts who may get hooked. The only thing that predicts whether a person is susceptible to a drug or not is one's genetics. The only way you will know whether you are susceptible to a drug is by the way the drug makes you feel. The author see that, addiction does not discriminate. It crosses all ages, sexes , races, and socioeconomic classes. Most addicts have no common personality trait that may have predicted that they may be susceptible to a given drugs. The only common denominator is their family history of addiction to that drug. One more misconception about addiction is that even the most powerful drugs like cocaine is not all people can be susceptible to it. That was about the facts that I learn from this book. But what I like more is the following paragraph. The best thing that I like in this book and do agree with is this;" Guilt can be a powerful motivator- so can anger. At an appropriate level, both guilt and anger can motivate you to act, to learn from your mistakes, and help you make a change for the better. However, at other times, these motions can make you lash out. They can make you feel defensive. Instead of learning from your mistakes, you may become more entrenched in your own belief system and forced to defend them tooth and nails, even when there is evidence to the contrary. " for the author, his guilt and anger made him want to learn as much as he could about this disease. I like this because this is a truth that most bad situations in our life became good and strong motivators.
In conclusion, Why can't Jonny just Quit? Is an excellent book that not just talks about addiction but also teach you how to get rid of it. All the information there are from a view of specialist doctor and all the stories are real. If you have the curiosity to know more about addiction you can try reading the book Why can't Jonny just Quit.
