Review by tanner87cbs -- How to Define Yourself
I am an IT Manager and am always in situations that involve a broad audience. My role deals with a lot of different individuals and departments. Having the opportunity to engage with people of different professions requires tact. This book offers a great resource that I will keep in my toolkit to help with my communication skills. It is usually not what you say, but how you say it, that guides a conversations outcome. This book gives positive direction on how to make those conversation outcomes positive.
The best part of this book is the way it is laid out. You could teach a class by reading the book out loud, and then discussing its content. The book begins with clear definitions of common terms used. I found this very useful while reading the book. I was confident I had a full understanding of the authors intent on every page. The method followed throughout the book is defining the stimulus in a scenario, followed by the response. With the secret sauce being the space of time in between. This space allows us to prepare a suitable response to determine how we try to be defined.
I did not notice any publishing errors while reading this book. The only part that I found hard to follow was the analogies around football. Located on page 53, I found it hard to follow the section defined as "Define Yourself with 4th and Goal". Now my lack of football knowledge is a huge driving factor here. Still, this presupposition of the reader's football knowledge left me lost in this section. Apart from that, I cannot point out anything I did not enjoy reading.
In conclusion, I found this book very insightful. I would recommend this book to everyone. I know everyone is a broad audience, but I cannot think of someone who would not benefit from it. I will say that the best target audience would be parents and anyone in leadership. I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating. I truly enjoyed reading this book. A big thank you to the author for sharing this perspective on cause and effect as it relates to our perceived definition of ourselves.
