A very interesting book on drug addiction with a refreshingly practical outlook on how to better deal with this problem. The title of the book is a little misleading as it makes it sound like the book is going to be a personal view of addiction and perhaps the journey of an individual trying to break the cycle.

The opposite is true because the book deals with many different kinds of addictions and shows how this is a problem that can affect anyone, of any age and from any income bracket. You will probably be surprised at some of the examples he gives because they are so different to the stereotype image of a drug addict that most of us have.

One of the most fascinating things for me was how the author, Kyle Oh, M.D., explains why drugs affect different people in different ways. He also discusses why we urgently need a different approach to treatment addressing the variety of factors involved in addiction which can be physical, emotional, environmental or genetic.

As someone who is not a doctor, I did find the book a little repetitive or long winded in places, but that is probably because it seems to be aimed mainly at professionals to help them deal with their patients. However, I also think it should be read by anyone who has friends or family dealing with this issue. It could go a long way to helping them understand the reasons behind the behaviour of loved ones that is causing so much pain and frustration.

As a society we are quick to judge others, quick to diagnose and quick to blame problems on lack of control. The reality is that addiction, like anything else, is a complex problem that affect individuals in different ways.

Why Can´t Jonny Just Quit is an important step forward in dealing with the war on drugs which is not working as we can see from the rising number of those affected. By looking at all the factors involved and learning how to differentiate between abuse and addiction, doctors and individuals can use this book to develop a better strategy for prevention.

I give this book a rating of four out of four stars because it is well-written book and addresses one of the most important issues of the current and future generations. Doctors, parents, friends and family members can all learn to spot potential issues and get help for patients and loved ones before it's too late.
