Initially I found it very difficult to read. I couldn't get any solid momentum as many sentences seemed disconnected from the last, probably because it was translated. However, by around page 80 I became quite firmly gripped by the characters' lives and stories. This made it a much more enjoyable read and I noticed the magic in Garcia Marquez's descriptions, particularly of peoples passions, like the final Aureliano's love/lust for Amaranta Ursula.
Colonel Aureliano was the most interesting character to me. I think his descent from capable and strong-minded to solitary and taciturn by the end of his life was was so tragic because it felt so realistic.
I really loved it and would recommend it to anyone who hasn't read any magical realism.

This book introduces the theme of Magical Realism in our genre. It is wonderful and builds a full world for future authors to explore.

. A pig’s tail that was never
allowed to be seen by any woman and that cost him his life when a butcher
friend did him the favor of chopping it off with his cleaver. José Arcadio
Buendía, with the whimsy of his nineteen years, resolved the problem with a
single phrase: “I don’t care if I have piglets as long as they can talk.” So they
were married amidst a festival of fireworks and a brass band that went on for
three days.
who is they in the paragraph . its obviously not Jose Arcedio Bunenda becouz he is a male.
i don't understand . how does this works. i am reading novel for the first time and very confused by it . can someone give me tips ?

I loved this book (and magical realism in general - see Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits for something similar in structure and genre). However I have issues with Márquez's depictions of underage sexual attraction by old men. It's not just something that was in this one book of his, otherwise it would not have flagged up so seriously in my mind being "literature" and all that. But in book after book there are increasingly disgusting and frightening stories of elderly men in love with or desiring to seduce little girls. While I adored One Hundred Years of Solitude, this consistently repeated trope (which often forms the entire plot of his other books) has put me off the author.

Has anyone else noticed this with Márquez? Am I missing the point somewhere?

You'll like it if you're fond of poetic language and lovely descriptions. It's a blend of text and poetry, very poetic. There is a plot, yet it feels as though the plot serves as a backdrop for the exquisite poetry text.
