The Horrid Novels of Northanger Abbey

Post by Christina O Phillips »

Hello, all,

For a research project, I'm re-reading Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and the horrid novels (gothic romance and horror) mentioned in the book. I've already read The Mysteries of Udolpho and will try the other ones.

Has anyone read these novels?

I've only ever seen the BBC Northanger Abbey, and was quite put off by it. It wasn't until a friend recently explained how that it was intended as a satire that I've considered revisiting it.

Is your project mainly informational or do you have a direction you're taking the conversation? Just curious.

Right now, I'd just like to talk to others about the books, see what they think, etc.
As for the research, I'm looking into writing a re-telling of Northanger Abbey.

I have read Northanger Abbey and was then inspired to read some of Ann Radcliffe's Gothic romances. I have read The Mysteries of Udolpho and A Sicilian Romance.
"Every reader is, while he is reading, the reader of his own self. The writer's work is merely a kind of optical instrument which he offers to the reader to enable him to discern what...he would perhaps never have perceived in himself."
