The Last Assassination by James E. Doucette is a story about politics, intrigue and suspense. It portrays the ugly picture of conspiracy among people in the governments and the business establishments to put themselves in a position of advantage over their rivals in expense of the innocent citizens. It reveals the involvement of media in spreading false information to mislead the investigation as well as to protect the perpetrators in exchange for money. It is a timely, realistic, and sad story of the present day politics. Many civil servants are not serving the people but actually, under the cover up of media, pursue their own selfish agenda.
The plot is well-crafted and brilliantly executed. It has a lot of twists and turns that will surprise the reader and will leave him asking for more. It is a very entertaining political thriller. The author weaves his knowledge of history, geography, business, politics, terrorism, assassination, and technology in this book. The reader will have a glimpse of the president in Washington DC, the defense secretary in Pentagon, the freedom fighters in Kurdistan, the king and the princes in Saudi Arabia, the underground tunnel and the Mossad agents in Israel, the bookstore in Paris, the Sotheby’s antique in London and the spacious green land of Finland. He can be a silent observer of the mind, struggles, and life of an assassin.
In this story, the characters became alive, as if this is an actual event of history. The characters are well-developed. The characters have personalities which match their roles. The dialogues are natural. The scenes match the settings of each situation. These blended together to form a very interesting and realistic story, filled with emotions, suspense, actions, and surprises. It is neither boring nor confusing.
Though I am addicted to more actions and conflict, I am satisfied with the story. This book will surely satisfy the reader’s appetite for suspense and action. I recommend this book to the adult readers of political thriller and crime. Lastly, I’m convinced, it deserves 4 out of 4 stars.
