[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Grift" by Tawnya Minca.]
Are you interested in getting inside someone else’s mind to see how their perception impacts the way they interact with the world? Do you wonder how con artists successfully con others and how people fall for the con? Are you intrigued by how a person could create and maintain multiple identities to serve various purposes? If you answered yes to these questions, then you should read[I]The Grift: Book 1: Where Perception Becomes Currency[/I] by Tawnya Minca.
This book follows the story of Brienna Blackwood, a woman who lives in London and has multiple identities that have allowed her to pull off heists and to convince people to share their wealth with her without a second thought. At the onset of the story she is on a luxury European cruise on a yacht, and this is where she meets Chad Miller. He holds a high-level position with a tech company and is eager to show off his wealth and attract a woman who completes his ideal self-image. Brienna charms Chad and slowly starts to amass wealth through him by having him purchase lavish gifts for her, including a piece of artwork by Renoir at an auction in Barcelona and an antique diamond brooch. She slowly works her way into his heart by feeding his ego and offering information about herself that makes Chad think that they are connecting, despite her not really sharing anything real or of substance. Throughout the story Brienna sometimes assumes other identities in order to acquire what she desires. She uses psychology and hiding in plain sight to pull off great feats. If you are intrigued to know more about what Brienna accomplishes and how she hides in plain sight, I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book.
Overall, I rate this story 4 out of 5 stars. The plot was intriguing, and the story had good pacing. It was well-edited, and I only found one error in the whole book. There were some parts of the story that felt repetitive and scripted and also some interactions in Brienna’s relationship with Chad that really made me cringe, so for these reasons I have deducted one star. I am interested to see how Brienna’s story continues in the next installment of this season.
