Review of Quiet Reclamation
Quiet Reclamation by Jared Swallow dives right into the action. This mystery political thriller begins with the death of Senator Jones. Doctor Gibbs, who examines the body, is baffled, as the cause of the death looks mysterious and eerily natural. He immediately calls the head of a secret organization to report the death, as seventeen congressmen, including Jones, have died in the past month in the same puzzling way. All the deaths look similar: natural yet enigmatic. The head, realizing the seriousness of the situation, calls in Special Agent Bartlett to investigate the deaths, which he now suspects are murders, despite a lack of evidence. As Bartlett begins investigating, he encounters strange situations, ranging from a simple car mishap to missing bodies. Then, what started as a medical mystery turns into a far more dangerous game when there are attacks and more murders. Someone is trying hard to stop the investigation. Who is behind all these deaths? How did the congressmen, who were healthy, suddenly collapse and die? Will Agent Bartlett find the answers?
The first thing I noted in the book is the author's writing style, which is a bit different—short and crisp. The sentences are simple and easy to understand, with some being too short, making me feel that they were meant for young adults. This punchy writing style put me off a bit initially, but later I started loving it. The second point is the character development; I felt a little more background on the characters would be good. But the story is fast-paced, and so many events unfold quickly, which hampered character development. Despite that, I adored some characters, especially Carlson. The third aspect I noted is that the ending was very abrupt, which left me unsatisfied. But after checking online, I found that this is the start of the series, which made me okay with the cliffhanger ending. But it would have been better if it had been mentioned on the PDF copy that I received. While these issues deterred my enjoyment a little, I felt they were not enough to deduct a star. Though the writing style felt odd in the beginning, I started to love it as I continued reading. Lack of character development is my personal opinion. Regarding the ending, I believe it was apt for the start of a series.
The medical mystery part was intriguing. This is not just a medical mystery; it involves political elements too. The reality of corrupt politics, where the government is controlled by powerful corporations, is portrayed by the author. The editing was pretty good; I noted only a few errors. This is a fast-paced read, and as the mystery and the action started to build up, I got hooked on the book. So much stuff happens, with some unexpected twists that left me gasping. I am eagerly waiting to read the next one in the series, as this book ends on a cliffhanger. As I have discussed earlier, the issues I noted didn't warrant a star deduction. Overall, I enjoyed reading this quick, action-filled thriller and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Readers who love fast-paced mystery thrillers with political and medical themes will enjoy this book.
