The life of a ten-year-old girl, Libby, was cut short by a gunshot while she played with her friend, Em, in the driveway. Shortly afterwards, Em's family moved away from the neighborhood, but the distance couldn't separate them from the impact of the tragic incident. Libby's voice became a part of Em's life, so much so that it became a part of Em's identity. When she found out the truth about who was behind Libby's death, a can of worms opened up that led her back to Gloomsbury where they once lived, and put her at loggerheads with her younger brother, Danny. What could Em do about the truth she found out, especially when it meant her life was threatened?

In this book, Ghosts, Becky Bronson has woven a touching story of a young woman's fight against gun violence that will leave you shocked by the facts, and show you the possibilities of becoming an agent of change in your own society. Though it is fiction, the focus of the book addresses the menace of gun violence in American society today, where children are exposed to the use of guns at an early age, and the statistics on gun-based violence keep getting worse.

I loved the simplicity of the book and the author's excellent writing style, especially in the articles Em wrote for the local newspaper, Gloomsbury Post. I never expected the direction the story went and the author did a good job of connecting all the characters and events without any loose ends. The book was not only entertaining, but also informative. I never knew there was such a thing as ghost guns. The word, “ghosts,” took on diverse meanings in the book, giving the book title a deeper significance. The book was flawlessly edited as I did not spot any errors. There was nothing I didn't like about the book. For these reasons, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to educators, parents, and teens, especially those living in areas riddled with gun violence. I also recommend it to lovers of crime fiction, mystery, suspense, and anyone who would love to make a big difference in their society.
