[Following is a volunteer review of "Going Gone" by Abraham Lopez.]
[rbc=4]id241057-125[/rbc]Going Gone written by Abraham Lopez is an “anthology about connections, modern America, and what a future could be like if a calamity were to befall the world as we know it”, as it is stated in the description. It presents 12 story lines that are connected, in one way or another, that starts in the first story, although 2 out of these 12 story lines are only tangentially affected. As there are various story lines, there will also be various settings, ranging from the Middle East to a secret military bunker, from Hollywood to a cult’s compound, and so much more. The central theme in this anthology is about what we have in common and who we are as individuals and as societies, when all is lost.

Abraham Lopez was born in rural Colorado since he was child. He also lived in Northern Nevada, Virginia, and Northwest Arkansas. With diverse environments and its local cultures Abraham had experienced throughout his life, it had made a great impact on his view of America and especially his writing style.

In my opinion, the writing style of Abraham Lopez is quite good. It can be very descriptive to the point that you can vividly imagine it in your head, immersing you into the character’s story, his/her circumstances, and what he/she is going through in order to survive. Everything is made out of detail from the author’s words, as characters are becoming 3-dimensional and the settings are quite realistic. The author also uses italicized words to greatly emphasize on something, and as a reader, it is truly effective. The only annoying part that I found in the book is that it seems like it wasn’t edited properly since there are many typos, mainly about two words joining together like “wasdone” as it is supposed to be “was done”.

The sequencing of the story is quite interesting. Although the timeline can only go forward, what makes it interesting is how it is told. As I have stated before that there are various story lines, there will also be various characters from each story line, whether they may be likable or not. Each main character from each story line is relatively different from another character from another story line. All these characters have a common role to play for us readers, and that is to explain the current state of the world, mainly about America, as it goes through an apocalyptic war. The current situation is told through the character’s perspective, and each perspective is different from the other, which is why it makes it interesting. They explain the current state about America, from the great and almighty America to the barbaric, violent, and self-destructive America.

Going Gone is simply no book that you can just read and forget about it in moments later. It is the kind of book where you still have a deep lingering for it, despite its gruesome and violent circumstances presented in the anthology. One idea that really struck me from the book is that “great civilizations would always come to an end” and I can somewhat agree to this saying. Just as how those once great civilizations became rulers of the world in their time period, before long, there will always be someone or a group of people who will push the hidden self-destruct button. The ending result would be just another ancient but failed civilization etched only in history. It is simply why this anthology is named Going Gone, where it literally means the path to destruction, in this case, in America.

As I read this book, I rate Going Gone by Abraham Lopez 4 out of 4 stars because of the deep insights that I have discovered plus with the interesting story lines and compelling writing style. Although it is in no ways a light read that anyone can handle, it will be worth your time to read such a fascinating book.
