The Diary of an Actor by Chandra Preethi is the story of an actor exposed to the seedy underbelly of the Bollywood scene. Sushil attends a birthday party for a famous actor with his girlfriend Raksha, where he sees the depravity of the rich and famous firsthand.

After leaving the party, Sushil takes his girlfriend home, but gets a call from his former manager, Usha. She has found herself in a predicament that requires assistance from Sushil. Because of his help, Sushil finds himself in dire circumstances and must do whatever he can to escape the situation.

This novel highlights the pressures, advantages, and disadvantages of being famous with access to money and power. The anecdotes described have been seen to happen in history, given those exact parameters. Love does not conquer all in this instance, and the meek seem to get trampled in the process.

The plot of the story was intriguing and effective in capturing my attention. The characters need a little more development. I found myself struggling to follow which character was interacting in the story. I am guessing the story was written in another language and translated into English. The use of adjectives and grammar made it difficult to read at times. Incorrect adjectives and verbs make expressions too aggressive or just inaccurate. An example of that is “she was showing too much hiccups.” I also noticed the overuse of the word, sir. It may be a cultural aspect. The description of sounds was more like a comic book than a novel.

The story would have been better if a native English-speaking editor had proofread it. The inconsistencies with the adjectives chosen compared to what was being conveyed made it difficult to read and comprehend. I had to go back many times and reread sections to see if I understood correctly. Therefore, I am rating The Diary of an Actor by Chandra Preethi 3 out of 5 stars.
