Dead Inside by M Mathews is a book about a young woman overcoming events that most people would have a hard time surviving. I would classify it as action and/or thriller and geared toward anyone over the age of 17. I would say that there may need to be a trigger warning on this book as it does deal with rape, kidnapping, and torture.
Janmarie is a young woman in college that has finally found a guy that she is willing to date. However, their first date goes horribly wrong and thus her nightmare begins. Janmarie is tortured, raped, and starved in order to try and break her spirit so that she can be sold. She is held with two other girls but does manage to escape. This is not a spoiler. This all happens in the first part of the book and there is way more to the story.
After Janmarie is rescued, she has to learn to live a new life in the witness protection program. She can not have any contact with friends or loved ones and is still trying to recover from her ordeal. The question then becomes if she can learn to trust again and find love. I do have to say that Luke is one of my favorite characters in this book. I think he is everything that we look for in a loved one: kind, patient, understanding, you get the drift.
I really liked the plot and story outline in this book. It does deal with dark subjects and makes you wonder about people’s humanity and how they became so evil. I had a hard time putting the book down because I was caught up wanting to know what was going to happen next. There were times that I would think I was coming to the end of the book and there would be a twist or new development. This book definitely does not follow the standard pattern that you see in most books.
I give this book 2 out of 4 stars because there are numerous errors that take away from the story. This book does not look to be professionally edited. Some of the wording is stiff and looks like it is being written in a journal. An example is the sentence “Don’t think I would have accomplished my studies if Carl and I were alone.” I think if some editing were done, this would be an awesome book.
