Fear of Gatlin by Gene Xavier explores the life of Kendall Gatlin, who, after a mission in Afghanistan, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His life changed while battling the disorder; he divorced his wife. He later sought professional help from Dr. McCluskey after his ex-wife, Lisa, persisted that he seek help. He opened up about his traumatic experience where many of his colleagues died in the line of duty. During group therapy, he met with Brent Sullivan, an old friend whom he had not seen for a long time. After catching up with his old friend, Brent suggested they go together on a vacation in England. Maybe it would help relieve the PTSD and paranoia as well as the insomnia he was suffering from.

Their arrival in England was the beginning of a lot more traumatic events. A bomb went off just as they were enjoying their drinks with unease after noticing a familiar face during their journey and threatening messages Brent received. A day before, a similar bomb had gone off, but astonishingly, Kendall became the suspect, and later on, his family was kidnapped. Who were these people who wanted Kendall dead, and why did they frame him when he was trying to recover from the unforgettable experience? Get a copy of the book.

The book looks like a series because of how it ended. The author, being a retired distinguished navy officer, wrote a page-turner. I felt like I was watching a movie as events unfolded. The story tells the struggles military individuals go through. I tried to put myself in Kendall's shoes; it was hard. I couldn't help but feel the difficulty he had that his family had been kidnapped by unknown people and that he couldn't help them because a notice had been issued that whoever saw him anywhere should report it; everyone knew his face, even children. It was such a difficult situation he was in.

I liked how the author showed the military struggles in a captivating and heartfelt manner. The suspense kept me hooked. The characters were well-developed in that each character was relatable and well-explained background information was provided, so I never got lost trying to figure out who the new character was. It also showed the importance of having friends like Brent and Amelia. The power struggle is costly, and the seekers would stop at nothing to get what they want. I noted a few grammatical errors in the book that could not distract my reading. The book was concise and enlightening. If the author is considering a movie for the book, I will for sure watch it, especially the instances where Kendall fought with the accusers or those he thought were framing him. It will be a great movie.

I give the book a rating of 5 stars out of 5 stars. I found nothing to dislike about the book. I did not tire of reading it. I hope there is a continuation of the book because it ended on a cliffhanger. The book deserves a perfect rating because it had a good storyline and it was a page-turner. Crime thriller fans will enjoy the book. I prefer the book to be read by adults because of the extensive profanities in the book.
