Review of The Algorithm Will See You Now
The Algorithm Will See You Now by J. L. Lycette paints a picture of healthcare run by AI. Hope Kestrel is a resident in a Seattle hospital that uses an algorithm to sort patients into "responders" and "non-responders." The "non-responders" are those the algorithm has determined will not respond to treatment and are instead sent to hospice care or turned away. This saves resources to treat those who can be cured and doesn't subject those who can not be saved to painful procedures. However, the algorithm does make mistakes, and the hospital's director, Marah Maddox, refuses to let the world become aware of these flaws. When one of Hope's patients suddenly is declared a "non-responder," Maddox makes it clear that Hope is to take the blame, not the algorithm. How will this impact Hope's career? Will the truth be revealed?
The characters in this novel are dynamic. Hope firmly believes in the algorithm because she saw her mother go through brutal cancer treatments that were ineffective. She believes that sparing the patients treatments they will not respond to is of the utmost importance. Her passion for medicine is palpable. I also thought that Jacie was an interesting character. She is a medical intern who is also skilled in computer science. I thought this was a combination that speaks to the intelligence and drive of her character.
The plot also moves along quickly. Though there is ample description, Lycette does not bog down the novel with highly technical details. With a background in medicine, the hospital setting and the algorithm were believable. The extensive AI usage in the book felt like something that could be real.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. From the flawless editing to the terrifying premise, there was nothing that I disliked about it. Anyone interested in reading about the potential of AI in healthcare should read this book. It highlights a terrifying possibility within an engaging novel. If you wish to avoid topics such as cancer and death, then please steer clear. Otherwise, I highly suggest you check out The Algorithm Will See You Now!
