I like the premise behind this imprint - mysteries with actual science behind them - but the writing in this one was clumsy. A baby is, at one point, described as suckling at a breast like a barracuda. Yes, a barracuda. I kept getting tripped up by instances like that, despite enjoying the story itself.

I don’t know which is making me want to read the book more, your review, or the synopsis. Either way, I’m interested!

WOW! This is a notable accolade!

The scene you describe in the catacombs reminds me of the Cask of Amontillado immediately, particularly because Fortunado pleads with Montressor to leave the catacombs much like the characters in your book. I wonder if the author took inspiration from Poe when he wrote this scene?

Great review. I got this book from NetGalley last month and really liked it. A unique blend of medical thriller and supernatural.

I don't like books dealing with the black magic subject but somehow I find the plot of the book really fascinating.

That really comes through in your review.
Despite finishing it so quickly, I held off writing my review because I wasn't quite sure how to put into words how much I enjoyed the way Rubin tugged and tied the storyline together to make such a cohesive and enjoyable novel. I'm still not sure if my review will do it justice.
I think you probably have done it justice - it sounds like a great read.
