Book Review: Out of Darknes

This is the story of a bullied boy who recovers his self-esteem, discovers courage and strength, and changes into a character of substance. His transformation is not only physical and emotional, but is growth in his understanding of relationships between humans, werewolves (aka Warriors) and Vampires

There are several themes that run through the story. One is the victim mentality. Poor Brian. He is overweight, and nobody liked him. Teased at school and ignored at home, he is a victim from the beginning. In the end, his “new” body and training equip him to save the world. He feels he doesn’t belong anywhere, is not truly a member of his family, and hates his stepfather, a businessman who values money and uses his family as showpieces – except for Brian.

The second theme is that of good versus evil. Warriors (werewolves) versus Vampires. Friends versus enemies.

Brian Porter finished eighth grade, and is out of school for the summer. All year long (and for several years before), he has been teased constantly. He goes home to an empty house – his parents have left on vacation, taking his two younger siblings with them. He is overweight, due to a weird experience when he was 9. He was bitten by a wolf, and had an allergic reaction to the bite. Brian didn’t know it at the time, but he was made a werewolf warrior as a result of that bite.
He meets a new classmate, and after being teased by his former best friend, and challenged to go into the scary house that is in his neighborhood. When he, the new girl, and his former best friend, Chris, all enter the house, strange things happen. He sees werewolves and vampires. He is injured in the fight, and the werewolf in charge bites him twice, to speed his recovery back to normal, and to claim him as a warrior before the vampires get him.

His friend, Chris, and Amy, are both also injured in the fight, To prevent them from dying, more experienced vampires give bites in order to restore health and strength. Chris is tormented by the other vampires, who offer him Amy; her blood will give him the strength he needs. But he refuses to take her.

Various characters tell the story of how the werewolves and vampires battled, and the werewolves ranks were depleted. Humans have been recruited, then are modified through a bite, trained, and sent out to conquer the Vampires. In several sections, the rules for vampire development are laid out. Vampires are subjects, and have only been bitten once, so tht they are weak. They serve as pawns for the bigger, stronger vampires. Only a full vampire can defeat a warrior, and the vampires goal is the destruction of the world.

Interestingly, television is a tool of the vampires. It is in this way that they can introduce their ideas to people and destroy society.

This book is a classic tale of good versus evil, in the form of Vampires (the bad guys) versus Warriors (Werewolves) Who will win?
