Babylon Berlin (Gereon Rath Mystery): police system of the book

Post by Anna Frank »

Hello there! Please, help me out: I'm not a native English speaker, but now, I'm reading Babylon Berlin (Gereon Rath Mystery) in English. I'm OK with the book itself, but the problem is: I'm completely unaware of the police ranks which are used in it. for instance:
DI - what is DI? - let's say it a detective inspector, but who is the person in the police system, what is his role, functions, or what is he in charged of? I have absolutely no idea.
To be honest, I Don't even know, which country's police system should I rely on, and where can I find a description of all the ranks
Maybe there is someone who also read the book and knows what I'm talking about, please, give me a piece of advice how to treat the ranks. Maybe you can clarify some of the most important ranks for me. Thanks a lot in advance.
