How realistic are James Ellroy's novels?

Post by Babaluma »

I have long enjoyed James Ellroy's novels and I am reading Perfidia. It struck me that this is one of his most brutal works as far as the portrayal of police brutality and racism. As he has long mixed in real life people with his fictional characters as well as lots of gossipy bits I was intrigued to know how realistic his work is? Don't get me wrong I can believe the LAPD was a brutal place in the times described in his work but the shear level of murder and torture described as well as the amount of racism virtually every character spouts is surely exaggerated? Also the little comment she makes about famous people such as describing Bing Crosby as a wife beater, is this all just rumours he chucks in to help create the sleazy atmosphere or based on factual research by him?

Any thought from you good people?
