Review of Devil Among Us
I loved Devil Among Us: Lara and Uri Book 2 by Jack Winnick. He wove a realistic tale, showing his expertise as a Middle East scholar. His references to terrorist events that have happened made his story even more believable.
This book is an excellent example of realistic fiction. It takes a current issue, the unrest in the Middle East, and uses it for the plot of the story. There was enough action throughout the book to keep me hooked from beginning to end. I really enjoyed the attention to detail. I was able to easily picture locations and really get into the story. The description of the characters and their personalities helped me make connections. I also learned a bit about the religions that played a vital role in how the story unfolded.
The two protagonists, Lara and Uri, had me rooting for them as they encountered each new danger in their attempt to prevent further violent activities. The additional twist of their personal relationship made me pull for them to make it through each dangerous encounter. The vivid description of the major antagonist, the Ghost, portrayed him as a cruel enemy who was easy to dislike.
The additional plot twist demonstrating how the greed of some American religious leaders fed into the problem added more depth to the story. It also provided the scaffolding for the wonderful resolution in the courtroom with the true antagonists being revealed.
I am giving Devil Among Us: Lara and Uri Book 2 a 5 out of 5 star rating. There were a few typographical errors, but these were minor. There is a bit of violence and a minimal amount of mild profanity, but it is appropriate for the story being told. The book ended with an opening to the possibility of a third book. I liked it well enough that I am looking forward to reading the next book in the Lara and Uri series.
