Review by micoleon13 -- The 11.05 Murders by Brian O'Hare
Detective Sergeant Denise Stewart is new to the Serious Crimes unit team and while she is just starting to fit in, tempers become frayed with the arrival of a new case. What at first seems like a straightforward, if somewhat gruesome murder, begins to unravel before the unit’s eyes.
As more people turn up dead, the killer seems just one step ahead of the team. What is his fixation with the time 11:05, and if they can work out its significance will they be able to crack the case?
The victims all have one tie with each other, but does that tie have anything to do with the assault of a university student twelve years ago, as a mysterious informant suggests? The team must act quickly before they all come under threat as the killer’s mind unravels.
Brian O’Hare has a gift for vivid imagery, creating realistic scenarios and wonderfully believable characters. While at times it does seem to be overly descriptive, he stays just shy of overloading the story and getting bogged down in over explained details.
The author approaches sexual assault and its aftermath with refreshingly honest clarity, while not having it overrun the story. This in itself quietly emphasizes the unfortunate presence of modern rape culture and societies reaction to it.
Although the story starts off gradually, the plot quickly spirals into a gripping read, as more suspects are brought to light. In every crime story, the reader is pushed to try and solve the crime before the final author reveal, however in this case I did not foresee the culprit, which I believe is another credit to the author.
I also enjoyed that the story was set in Ireland. A lot of crime fiction is America based, so it was a breath of fresh air to have Ireland and its troubled history as part of this story’s backdrop.
I found in the first chapters it was very easy to get distracted by all the acronyms of the different police force terms. The weren't explained and seemed to be unnecessary. However this soon gave way to an intriguing story and a genuine enjoyment of the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery, crime and especially those who like a slightly more challenging psychological read. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. A brilliantly well written book.
