[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Pavor Nocturnus" by Trevor Whittemore.]
[rbc=3]id106639-125[/rbc]8 year old Mikey is having trouble adjusting to life at his new house. He is being bullied at school which makes it difficult to make friends and to make matters worse, he is being plagued by nightmares. These nightmare have evolved into day terrors as well. He tells his parents about it, but they don’t believe him until they begin to see the monster and ghosts that their son describes. After researching the history of their house, a gruesome discovery is made. Can the family find a way to defeat this monster while protecting each other or will they all become a new chapter in the history of that house?

Trevor Whittemore, author of Pavor Nocturnus, is a new voice in horror. His writing has hints of Stephen King and P.J. Parrish. He creates a wonderful yet terrifying storyline while using some classic horror elements. Haunted houses, monsters, and ghosts are all present in this story, however he adds some modern twists to each of these ideas. The battle of good versus evil plays out very well throughout the entire story. I will more than likely read more of his stories in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The action started within the first five pages and managed to keep my attention to the very end. The author does a wonderful job at integrating multiple forces into the storyline. He included religious figures without making it too intense. He describes the characters using great detail which allowed me to visualize them perfectly. I thought this book would be more along the lines of the young adult genre, but I was mistaken.

There were several grammatical mistakes that I noticed. Some quotation marks were missing as well as one conversation was written in paragraph form. The word said was overused in my opinion. These mistakes caused some distractions for me. I believe that another round of editing and switching out said for more descriptive words, such as exclaimed or mumbled, would add to the story.

Overall, I enjoyed Pavor Nocturnus by Trevor Whittemore. I give it 3 out of 4 stars. It is a great horror novella that has modern twists on classic elements. Some editing is needed in order for me to give this book a perfect score. I will, however, recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
