The Honey Bubble is a crime novel written by screen and television writer George Putnam.

For three other less successful and envious bar owners in the area, it doesn’t matter that Marty Bagliamente has a broken marriage or that his son is long dead. For them he has a thriving nightclub and a beautiful mistress, hence, he deserves to die. So, together they scheme and come up with a plan of killing Marty and his mistress, Rachel Ellis, and make it appear like murder-suicide. However, Marty’s loyal bodyguard, Cedar Roach, gets wind of the plot and comes up with a plan of his own.

Told in the third person perspective, the book is about an assassination plan against someone who is passionate about his business and takes delight from other people’s enjoyment but is unreasonably hated because he is successful and well-liked. It depicts how someone could be so unhappy about another person’s success that he would orchestrate that person’s demise and justify his actions with his self-serving intentions. Moreover, it describes how easily a simple-minded person can be manipulated into doing something heinous. It shows how envy can turn a person into a monster and how the concept of revenge poisons the heart and befuddles the mind of a smart and deep-thinking individual. In addition, it portrays how dangerous zealots can be and how judgmental self-righteous people can get.

With a steady pace, this book is a very interesting and exciting crime novel from start to finish and I enjoy it immensely. Halfway through the book, the pacing picks up when the action begins and the suspense kicks into gear spurred by shocking twists and surprising turns of events making the book unpredictable and even more exciting.

The overall tone of the book is casual and the story is easy to read and understand. It is rich in vivid descriptions and witty dialogues. The author creates memorable characters, most of them with distorted frames of mind, which I find amusing. Kenny is the envious and greedy bar owner who is extremely jealous of Marty. Cammy is simple-minded, easily intimidated, and easily manipulated. Dom is vindictive and wants nothing but to take Marty down. Cedar is a deep thinker who believes that all living things are connected to a supreme directive; he is also cold and ruthless. Marty is the successful nightclub owner whom everybody likes. My favorite character is Rachel. Not only is she beautiful and smart, she is also tough and brave, and she is able to change herself for the better.

I love how the author connects the characters: like how Kenny is connected to Curly, Curly to Bernice, Bernice to Rachel and Rachel to Marty. What I like most, however, is how the author neatly wraps up the story, with no loose ends and with all issues resolved which leaves me satisfied and contented.

I, therefore, give this book the rate of 4 out of 4 stars and I recommend it to fans of crime and suspense novels. Some violent scenes, however, may not be suitable for young readers.

Thanks for the great review! I am always interested in new crime/suspense novels so I will definitely check this one out. I also enjoy witty dialogue and well developed characters and it sounds like this one definitely has some of both! Thanks again for the review.

I have not read a suspense or crime novel in quite awhile. I think this may be my next book on my reading list. I love that the story was easy to read and doesn't get complicated or introduce too many characters. Also, I like that the book ends with no questions left to answer. Thank you for such a great review.

Great review, kimmyschemy06! I love when authors incorporate vivid descriptions, witty dialogue, and when characters are connected well with one another. Add this with some good suspense and crime, then this book sounds like a winner! Congratulations to the author for receiving such a positive review!

Great job on the review! After reading the blurb, I was instantly reminded of the movie Horrible Bosses, but after reading your review I guess it is quite different. Great that you enjoyed it :)
