Review of I Saw What He Did
Serendipity (Ren) Shephard has been made redundant from her teaching job and was enjoying some time to decide what she wishes to do next. Ren wants to become a writer. However, Ren was not as productive as she intended, and her friends encouraged her by setting a deadline for Ren to take the next step. On the back of this, Ren signed up for an online writing course for aspiring authors. The online writing course was more than Ren bargained for when she witnessed the murder of one of the attendees live onscreen. With absentee parents and a wayward sister, find out what happens next within I Saw What He Did by Kemi Estephane.
I Saw What He Did is a psychological thriller full of twists and turns that hampered my ability to guess the ending. I recommend this book to adults who love gripping psychological thrillers and something that keeps them guessing. It does contain profanity.
I enjoyed the pedestrian style of the author’s work. Minor details of conventional life are considered and described naturally in the comings and goings of Ren. Some examples include skin sticking to a bar chair in the heat and worrying about internet buffering for online meetings post-pandemic. The author additionally employed some vocabulary I had not heard or read in a while, which I enjoyed seeing. I also appreciated Ren’s internal dialogue, which I found remarkably realistic. Ren would be judgemental of someone and then chastise herself, or her focus would wander when completing a task. Finally, I liked the level of suspense the author was able to build. There was inevitably something new and unexpected to the extent the author described it within the book as being like a “Whac-a-Mole”.
There was only one thing I did not like about the book. I was disappointed with the ending. I cannot discuss this too much without mentioning any spoilers. However, while I did not guess the outcome, I did think it was an easy way out.
Irrespective of the ending and with only four errors, I nevertheless give I Saw What He Did five out of five stars. It is a thought-provoking page-turner that has undergone professional editing.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review, although I'm sorry you found it triggering.Rica Concepcion wrote: ↑11 Sep 2023, 19:36 What a disturbing experience! Witnessing someone being killed live online is traumatizing. I am curious and interested in Ren's character, and I found it triggering. Thanks for the simple yet easy-to-understand review. good job

Ren was very relatable and I very much enjoyed that about the book. As for the ending, it completely makes sense when all the plot points come together and I found my issue with it minor enough that I didn't deduct a star for it, so I'm sure you will still enjoy the book as a whole.Cara Wilding wrote: ↑12 Sep 2023, 21:54 The plot sounds interesting...witnessing an online murder...that's a new one for me! I enjoyed reading what you liked best about this book. The judgmental internal dialogue made me giggle, and I immediately related! Your review has me on the fence with this one. I NEED to know the easy out you speak of, but I know I probably will be similarly disappointed. Thanks so much for your review!
