@bookowlie

Indeed. Hey, on a scale from 1 to 10, how do you feel about this genre?

On a scale of 1 to 10....this genre is 12 - ha ha ha. Generally true crime stories have a large dose of following the clues, analyzing the evidence, putting the pieces of the puzzle together, plus there is often discussion of the backstory and motives of the suspect. Perfection for me.

When you put it like that... It's fun following a detective as he tries to solve a crime, especially a difficult one. When you get to the end, and your guess turns out to be right, it's really awesome.

In this book, the killer wash't a character that was previously mentioned. He was a surprise to the reader just as he was unknown to the police until something happens (no spoilers).

In many crime books, the criminal is known to the reader.

With many true crime books, it's not a whodunit, but a story of how to prove "he done it".

I didn't think I would be interested in reading about real crime, but after reading your review, which was very informative by the way, I think I might like to give this book a try. I like to read books that are a little more uplifting so I usually avoid these kinds of books, but I think I would like to learn about the way crimes used to be solved and compare it to how much more involved and accurate the process can be now. It sounds like the author was able to write about these mysterious murders in an interesting way and the ending sounds intriguing.

Thanks Amheiser. It was interesting to discover how primitive the methods for crime-solving used to be. However, I still think criminal investigations "way back when" were handled better in the larger cities such as NY, Chicago, and Boston vs. Dayton, Ohio.

Thanks Tularula and welcome to the forums! I also love true crime books. In this case, it was interesting because one of the victims was the author's great aunt.

You're welcome, and thanks for the welcome! Yeah, whenever an author has a personal connection to the story outside of actually writing it, its kind of fascinating...

Another great review. Thanks for doing such a great job, your reviews are so helpful in deciding what I might or might not like to read.

I never thought of it from that persepective before..."discussed on a medium they could never have conceived". How amazing is that?

Thanks Mike_Lang. What was so interesting to me was the mix of the police, coroner, and media.
