Review of Manning a Raptor
Manning a Raptor is the fifth volume of a series written by AA Freda. It focuses on James Coppi and his wife, Samantha, and can be read as a stand-alone book. In 1968, Sam and James were just a young duo with gloomy and uncertain futures. More than a decade after their first meeting, they are a successful couple with a huge fortune. As a result, there are those who want the pair's money, and there are those who want their heads. This time, their opponents consist of some mysterious murderers, a senator, and even the leader of the US. How can the Coppis get themselves out of this mess? What shall be the price for their future?
My favorite part is about the Coppi couple. Like real-life spouses, they have ups and downs in their relationship. James is a good husband. He tries to involve his wife in everything, whether it is work or domestic affairs. He asks for her opinions before making important decisions, and he frequently emphasizes that Sam is his equal partner. Usually, she will be the one who will speak up bluntly when James is in a pinch and can't openly voice his disagreement.
Despite their harmony, Sam is uneasy that James doesn't truly care for her and their children. Like a raptor, James constantly risks his life during his adventures while trying to soothe his wife's anxiety. As the number of their enemies increases, the stress gradually accumulates until Sam is fed up and decides to deal with her bird of prey. I guess feminists will fancy her.
However, if you are looking for an action-packed thriller, this is not it. The story is more about playing politics, and the pace is quite slow. Personally, I think including too many events in 300 pages is not a very good idea. It dilutes the plot, and you might find yourself wondering which one is the main affair. For example, the novel starts with a murder, but it is barely mentioned later, and they solve it within one page. Since I found a lot of grammatical errors, I would also suggest another round of proofreading.
Considering the negative aspects, I will rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I think it will be appealing to those who are interested in political novels. It has some erotic scenes and contains a lot of swear words, so I won't recommend it to young readers.
