Review of Respect…Fear has no Rival
In Respect!: Fear has no Rival!, Frank W Ricci brings to the forefront stories of the underworld of crime by the Sicilians in America and Latin countries. With various characters and lives intersecting, Frank W Ricci lays bare the salacious details of the dealings of the Sicilian Mafia. The Mafia is an organisation of Italians that is involved in organised crime. From drug dealing and prostitution to giving loans with exorbitant interests and scamming people under the guise of protection, there is an organised hierarchy within the Mafia as the various parts move harmoniously like a well-oiled machine. The guys at the top command the respect of their subordinates without asking for it but ensuring it with the threat of death.
In the Mafia, there is a chain of command. At the top are the Capos such as Fat Paulie. The wise guys follow, and then the enforcers. Lower on the food chain, you find the bean counters. They all work together to provide for their families and their different Goomars. If you work hard enough in the Mafia, you can even live a life of luxury with various houses in vacation destinations, but there is a catch. Once you get entangled with the Mafia, you are bound to them for life, and they can control your life even when you have cut ties with them.
I love the depiction of Italian culture in the novel. The cuisine was well portrayed, and even the Italian accents were depicted correctly. I also like that a great lesson was passed in this book. The lesson is that no peace comes from a life of crime. Although they made a lot of money, they were always looking over their backs in fear. This book also teaches that greed is to be shunned if one wants to live a life worthy of emulation. The danger drug dealing poses to the dealers, the users and the larger society was imparted as lessons. I quite like Carmen's smartness and assertiveness. He was the only person in this book that refused to cower to the deceit and bullying of the Mafia. He defended himself quite well.
I did not like the technical descriptions of ammunition and drug dealing. I guarantee the words in those parts of the book will go over the heads of a lot of readers because it will be difficult for them to understand the point being passed across.
The story was well written and professionally edited, as I found just a few errors in it. However, owing to my negative remarks, I will deduct one star from Respect!: Fear has no Rival! by Frank W Ricci. I rate the book three out of four stars.
Respect!: Fear has no Rival! by Frank W Ricci is perfect for fans of crime fiction. It is also an essential book for impressionable youngsters to whom a life of crime is glamorised. This book will teach them that there is nothing to be desired in a life of crime.
