Review of The Expansion
Christoph Martin is the author of this fictional tale about British geomatic engineer - Max Burns - as he, his best friend (Godfredo Roco) and his father (Paco Roco), and his team of scientists work together to win this contest for the expansion of the Panama Canal. This project is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Max to grow in his field and gain notoriety, but there’s something sinister taking place behind the scenes that not even Max is aware of. In the meanwhile, the author introduces Karis Deen, a scientist who works at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama City. But Karis is not all that she seems to be and her secret just might be the demise or saving grace of Max’s life.
The message that I got from this book is that it’s never a good idea to be greedy. This expansion on the Panama Canal will show the true colors of certain characters once money becomes a topic of discussion. Martin did a great job of covering a range of topics like love, betrayal, greed, and teamwork. Max will have to decipher who is for him and who is against him in a world that’s full of secrets.
The only thing I had to get used to in this story was the time jump. I was reading along to the story and the next chapter will say that it’s a year later or a couple of months ahead from where the story left off. But I understood eventually that, that was used to help progress a different character journey. I really liked how the author dedicated each chapter solely to each main character in the book. It showcased their inner monologues and what they were doing when no one is watching.
I had a wonderful time reading this book. The author did a great job with crafting a well-written story that flowed seamlessly and held my attention throughout. There were a couple of errors in the book, but they didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the storyline. Even with these minimal errors, I will say that Christoph Martin did a superb job of writing a thrilling, action-packed novel for lovers of this genre. There was nothing I disliked about this book. Also, the ending leaves the way for a possible sequel; I cannot wait for that to happen. If you do not like excessive profanity, then this book is not for you. I’m more than happy to give
