Review of Trim Kamp
Trim Kamp by AE Gold is an adventure of two professional skateboarders, Evan and Ian, and their other team members, Maxwell and Ashley. Evan and Ian felt that they would not have bright future skateboarding because of several injuries they had sustained and other issues. They eventually decided to try out another thing in life. Spun by their love for weed and zeal to learn more about it, they decided to work as trimmers at weed farms. The book is an account of their escapades at different weed farms and the lessons they learn.
The book is written from Evan's point of view. The author’s writing style is unique; it feels like he is talking to me throughout the time I spent reading the book. The book is arranged in short chapters with artworks and a title that hints at the chapter’s narration. The fact that the author took his time to explain words, slangs and expressions that could confuse the readers is a good boost.
I learnt so many things from the book. For example, I learned how to identify the medicinal part of weed that is used to treat cancer, carefully trim weed without spoiling that essential part, and process weed from the field up until storage. It was also good to learn that a specific amount of weed is legalised in some states in the United States. However, in my part of the world, weed is illegal.
The characters are not complex. They are well-developed with no touch of confusion in their build-up. I found all of the characters lovable and impressive. Ian’s attitude to always take risks and dare all impossibilities is a good attitude, which eventually pays off.
The infusion of romance makes the book relatable. The romance between Evan and Ashley is so natural and not imposing. I like how they concluded breaking up their romance without being emotionally attached. It shows a great deal of maturity. Although, I had already known that the relationship would not sail past the adventure from the onset. I learnt from their relationship that it is counterproductive to force a relationship if the two parties do not share the same belief system. The support each Turtle team member gives each other for the success of their adventure is worth emulating. The myth of Bigfoot (the mystical creature) was discussed in the book, and I found it interesting because the first time I heard about the creature was in a film.
The arrangement of the book is a bit confusing. Chapter one started with how they got a trimming work at Hyphy Farm, and at chapter ten, the build-up to how they got to Hyphy Farm was narrated. I found this confusing because I had to go back to chapter one to properly understand what was going on. Apart from this, I dislike no other thing about the book.
I will not advise young readers below the age of 17 to read this book because of the content and strong profane words used. However, I recommend it to lovers of adventure who will not bother about the book’s theme. I also recommend it to all mature readers who will not find the profane words offensive. I will rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the errors I found. Another round of editing would make this book a better one.
