Review of Longclaws
Longclaws by Steve Peek features an alien species bearing the same name. With their lethal claws and speed, they constantly tried to fill their stomachs, bred, and avoided their natural enemies. One day, a certain Leader of a clan discovered a way to our Earth. In the longclaws' eyes, this place was their paradise. By hijacking Tom Mason's body, Leader was able to open the gate that connected his world to his so-called heaven. True to their myth, this dimension was filled with food. The longclaws could drink blood to their hearts' content, and they were safe from their foes after closing the portal. However, was this really their promised land? Would mankind sit still and let the bloodsuckers feed on them? Which race would survive this bizarre battle?
If you are a fan of suspenseful thrillers, this tale is right up your alley. The author really has a knack for describing. Each breed is depicted in detail, giving us clear images of their looks and behaviors. Through his words, things come to life, and the scenes move quickly like those of a movie. You can practically feel the longclaws' daily anxiety and fear when they strive to live. As for humans, many of them become food for the monsters. I have to say the author doesn't shy away from killing his characters. That is why it's interesting to see how mankind would survive and repel these foreign creatures.
Still, the story frequently shifts between worlds and eras, so some readers may not enjoy that. Together with the lack of dates, it makes the beginning confusing. You will need several pages to connect the dots and get to the point. Besides, I had a hard time identifying some characters. This is because the plot jumps from the eighth chapter to the fifteenth one. Later, the missing chapters show up after the twenty-eighth segment. I'm not sure if only my copy has this issue, but along with the grammar errors, I suppose it needs a second round of proofreading.
There are a few romantic relationships, but they are totally unnecessary. The book would be much more concise without that cliché, especially when the girls are completely useless throughout the story.
Because of the mentioned negative points, I will rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. With the brutal killings and profanities, it is not safe for young readers. If you want a horror novel featuring a survival game, this is for you.
