Tim McAndrews, an assistant prosecutor, shoots and kills a man to protect his newlywed wife, Dani St. Claire, a wealthy winery and beef ranch owner. On his 4 week unpaid suspension, Dani arranges a skiing vacation for them and Tim’s lifelong friends Scott Redton, a Seattle detective and Kathy Hope, a medical examiner. A few days before they leave, twin boys get dropped off in front of a Children’s Hospital in Seattle, severely beaten, sodomized and on the brink of death. After numerous efforts from the nurses, the twin boys don’t survive. The twins turn out to have no record at all and the police don’t know who they are or who their parents are and no kidnapping was reported. The small piece of rainbow colored duct tape is the only evidence they have. Kathy turns to Tim for his insight and with the hope that he’ll take on the case, once he’s back from his suspension. On the second day of their skiing trip, a child gets kidnapped right in front of them. After a snowmobile chase, the child is rescued but the perpetrator gets away. This however kick starts the investigation, not only for the twin boys, but also for various other kidnapped children between the ages of 6 and 8 years of age, some of which the police were not even informed about.
As the investigation progresses, you are left speechless as to whom the possible participants of the syndicate are suspected to be.

Snow Country Lane, by Sarah Vail, is a reminder of how cruel, wicked and determined some of mankind can be. The fact that some humans will go to extreme lengths to get what they want, like power, money, love and whatever else they desire, and with no consciousness or care on how they get what they want.

This novel is well thought out and the research done is superb. Human trafficking is an unfortunate part of society these days and although you don’t always hear about the cases, children kidnapping stats are unfortunately rising with a worrisome amount each year.

What I like about the book is that you don’t only have the insights and next moves of the main characters lives but also those of the kidnapper. This makes a perfect balance between mystery and suspense. The short chapters are a definite plus for me.

I truly cannot find anything negative to say about this book, it is extremely well written and planned. However, some readers, especially the faint hearted, might find the descriptions on the children’s situations and abuse a bit extreme. To me, this is necessary to get you, as reader, into the full realization of how horrific child trafficking actually is.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The reason for this rating is that it’s captivating and keeps you on the edge of your seat at all times. You literally feel like you are a part of the team, trying to solve this case. The story telling ability of the author is refreshing. This book is professionally edited and I did not find any noticeable errors. This book will be a perfect read for readers that like their suspense, detective and mystery books.
