It’s been a rough year for Hailey. Her honor’s degree in Journalism was within reach when her world came crashing down. First, her mother died of COVID-19 four months ago. Since then, dragging herself to class has been a chore, and she is behind on her research project. Now, the rent is due, and she has run out of money. Carol, her faculty advisor, comes to her rescue with an externship. The summer job will give Hailey the credits and the money she needs to get back on track and finish her education. That is if the university-funded job working at a small-town newspaper does not bore her to death first.

On a hike through desert canyons to familiarize herself with the area where she will spend her summer, Hailey witnesses a crime that changes everything. This job might be the death of her, but it will not be from boredom!

Join Hailey, Ash, the paper’s photographer, and a hermit named Relic as they uncover the mystery behind the reconstruction of the Broken Inn. This old resort has always lived up to its name. Why would anyone want to re-open a resort that has failed repeatedly? And why are the police ignoring Hailey’s report of a crime? Who can be trusted?

Action, plot twists, a bit of humor, and a dog are just a few of the things that make Broken Inn a good read. A. W. Baldwin has written six Relic Series Novels. Fans of Relic know that he is a recluse, adept at surviving in the desert, a talented problem-solver as well as a sage philosopher.

Woven through the mystery of the Broken Inn are issues germane to the fragile desert ecology. The story broaches important issues like abandoned mines, water usage, and cultural artifacts. It does this without losing sight that the book is a work of entertainment.

I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. The characters are engaging, the mystery is challenging to puzzle out, and the story is entertaining. I noticed no grammatical or spelling errors to distract from my reading pleasure.

Broken Inn is a great stand-alone read. The only hanging threads at the end of the novel are those surrounding Relic. There are already six books that we can read to learn more about him, his background, and his life in the desert.

Fans of mysteries and action novels will be entertained and intrigued by the adventures of this crew in the desert around the Broken Inn.
