Review of Breakers
Billy McArdle can never handle his liquor. He is an angry drunk, and when he saw the English guy, his anger and drinking did not help the situation. He and his friends are involved in illegal business. The drugs, the immigrants, and they get a good cut out of it. But once on a fishing expedition, Billy’s friend Denny drowns and dies inexplicably. Now Billy is the only suspect in this case.
Clive has inherited a piece of land in Porkstail. He decides to build a house on that land for his wife and kid. On one stormy night when there should not be anyone out near sea, a young boy comes and knocks on the door of Clive’s caravan. Who is this boy? Where did he come from? Did he swim through the sea and landed on the beach? Is he an orphan? Does he understand English? There are a lot of questions and a lot to find out. Will the police be able to shed some light on these events?
Breakers by Barry Litherland is a novel that comprises many storylines that converge into one at the end. The book covers a lot of different genres like horror, crime, and mystery. It also includes some paranormal activities that make it even more interesting. The author has written each chapter through the perspectives of different characters. As the new characters are introduced, the chapters with their narration take the story forward. The book is fast-paced and never settles on one person’s narrative for too long. The author has described everything in detail the characters, personalities, and places where the main events occur. One can imagine everything from the thorough descriptions given in the book.
There is only one negative point I found about this book. The author has taken a lot of similar names for the characters. Danny, Denny, Benny, Billy, and Bill are some of the characters that appear throughout the book and have just one or two different letters. It is confusing to differentiate between them while reading. I had to go back to different chapters to see what is the significance of these people.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book definitely deserves a good rating for its fascinating plot and for the flow of the narration. Even though it has a lot of positive points. The confusing names of the characters made me break the flow of reading and go back to the previous chapters.
Breakers is for anyone who likes crime, horror, thriller, mystery, and some paranormal events. The book includes several instances of profanity. Hence, I would recommend this book to adult, mature readers. The book is exceptionally well-edited and doesn’t have any grammatical or spelling mistakes.
