Review of E M P Honeymoon
E M P Honeymoon: Kelly and Tom is a romantic adventure by Dorothy May Mercer. It centers around a newlywed couple, Kelly and Tom, who have chosen a beautiful vacation spot in Honduras to enjoy their honeymoon. Little do they know that whilst enjoying the sand, sun, and romance, they will stumble upon a terrorist operation, set on causing chaos in the United States. They end up teaming together with a CIA agent, an all-girl crime-fighting group, and several other institutions in an attempt to counteract the impending threat.
This was a fun, easy book to read. I found the characters believable, even human in their flaws. Kelly, for example, is a normal young woman who is newly married and in love. She is smart and brave, as is displayed by her clever escape from a sticky situation, yet she can be rightfully frightened and inclined to be scared in risky settings. The plot was also quite intriguing, and well thought out by the author. The story also succeeded in encouraging the reader to sympathize with the American cause, as opposed to the enemy.
The main negative point about the book for me was the immense detail about nuclear science. One would have to be a real nuclear science fanatic to truly appreciate the information overload. I felt that the book could have done with less of that and more action, whether in the form of danger or romance. Another negative element was a loose end or two that left me with questions. One of the characters, for instance, seems to become gradually ill as the book progresses, but there is no real explanation as to why. The ending was also quite abrupt and a little predictable. The book was clearly professionally edited. I only found a few mistakes, which did not take anything away from an enjoyable reading experience.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason for this is that I had a pleasant time reading the story. It had all my favorite things, like romance, action, and the beach. I also enjoyed the way in which the story was told, from the viewpoint of the different characters. This made it easier to relate to them, even the ‘terrorists.’ I withheld the fourth star purely because I felt that the story could have been better wrapped up, and had less of the technical cyber information.
I would not recommend this book to a younger or sensitive audience, as it contains a fair bit of violent content. I was pleased to note that there was no profanity throughout the course of my read. Any lover of adventure fiction would enjoy this book. I also really appreciate romance and a bit of mystery, which was definitely present in the story. Any fellow fan would love these elements as well.
