Pearl River Mansion is the second book in a 3-book series by Richard Schwartz. Strange things happen at Pearl River Mansion where widow, Joan Chandler, lives. The mansion is set on a river in Mississippi where alligators prowl around looking for their next victim. But alligators are not the only predators searching for satisfaction. Joan Chandler uses her money as a bargaining chip to always get her way. She will spare no expense to exercise complete control over her son and his family. She even buys her way out of a murder charge for a while. This story follows private investigators Jack Kendall and Stacy Young who investigate Mrs. Chandler following important information they receive from an informant. Throughout the book, they ponder who to trust, what is the truth, and how to best use the information they have.

This book is not a mystery in the sense that the reader is trying to figure out "who dunnit?", but instead, the reader is intrigued by trying to figure out what Kendall and Young should do next with the information they discover. I fell in love with the characters and felt compelled to root for the underdog, a little girl named Rachael who fell victim to her family's bad decisions.

The only criticism I have for this book is that it felt like it should have ended sooner than it did. The investigators had the mystery solved well-before the book ended.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was the kind of story that kept me up reading into the night, because I could not wait to find out what was going to happen next!

I recommend this book to adult readers who can handle small amounts of foul language and implicit sexual situations. Audiences that appreciate a good love story intertwined with murder, cover ups, and a rich controlling mother will enjoy this drama!
