The Trafficking Murders is a crime fiction novel written by Brian O’Hare. It was already his fifth book featuring Detective Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan. The story revolves around the illicit industry of human trafficking in Northern Ireland. One group of syndicates ships their prey illegally from Romania. Alina Balauru, as well as the other victims, were easily deceived by promises of a better life abroad. Unbeknownst to them, the horror of abuse and sexual slavery awaits at the foreign land.

Another group of traffickers targets Chinese scholars at Queen’s University. From working as an escort to high profile clients, ‘The Shadow’ has turned them into prostitutes against their own will. But the unfortunate death of Cheung Mingzhu and the escape of Lin Hui will lead to their collapse. DCI Jim Sheehan and his team of crime-solvers must find these evildoers before another innocent victim fell into their hands.

The cover strongly speaks about the book. Just the thought of being one of the girls forced into sex slavery is terrifying. The author did the right approach by excluding horrible narrations of the sexual assault which might trigger anxiety to the readers especially to women. 11:05 Murders is the first book I've read in the Sheehan Mysteries. If I would compare the two, The Trafficking Murders contains less violence and gore. But it doesn’t necessarily reduce the suspense and thrill that the crime fiction fans crave. The investigation phase is positively engaging. If I were someone studying criminology, the police procedurals, and forensic terms written here are definitely useful. The plot is not predictable and will surely give you a good time guessing the person behind the alias ‘The Shadow’.

As to the characters, what we have here is a great team of police detectives. The author has given everyone enough spotlight to showcase their strengths. Sheehan is a superior who values his subordinates, is quick-witted, and a man of integrity. Denise Stewart, the only woman in the group, has equally good investigating skills. I’m happy to know that her relationship with Tom Allen (another police sergeant in their team) remained strong. Moreover, readers will find amusement with our duo — Miller and Connors. These two add humor to the story particularly when they have to act out to get the necessary information for Mingzhu’s case. Watch out for Matei Barbu too. He’s a minor character, but indeed my favorite.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is another great piece of writing. O’Hare has effectively used this platform to help raise awareness that human trafficking does exist.
Brief information about Modern Slavery and People Trafficking was provided in the Foreword section. You will also find a helpful list of characters and acronyms on the first few pages.

Do read this book if you enjoy reading criminal investigation or detective stories. Also, if you prefer content with an element of romance, minimal violence, and profanity, this one is for you.
