Review by Mys_Trea -- The Last Assassination
Upon reading the description of The Last Assassination by James E. Doucette, I quickly decided that I would be reading this book. Not only was the title intriguing, but I was promised action, mystery and adventure; an irresistible combination according to me.
When a U.S drone bombs a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Aleppo, Syria, upheaval ensues and someone has to be held responsible. The U.S military seems content enough to put the blame on the drone's pilot, Jesse Plotnick who insists the drone was hacked. What the military doesn't count on, however, is that Jesse is the son of Mark Plotnick, a retired Mossad agent and successful Washington DC lawyer. Mark is not going to take this lying down. What follows is a thrilling rollercoaster ride, as Mark enlists the help of an old friend, Philip whom he met during his Mossad days and is currently a deadly assassin. The two resolve to do whatever it takes to find the mysterious hacker and uncover the truth behind these strange occurrences.
I enjoyed the manner in which this story was written. It is set in different locations, with clear descriptions of each country. I could, for example, picture myself sweating it out on the harsh Nevada desert, with nothing but sand dunes for miles. The different subplots are told from the perspective of the various characters and come together beautifully at the end. I found myself thoroughly engaged and not at all confused as I made my way through the story. I will say though, that this is not a lazy read. One is compelled to think critically. The writer clearly demonstrates his understanding of the political landscape in various parts of the world, such as the Middle East. His geographical knowledge is also solid, as he draws vivid pictures of the different countries he includes in the story.
I did not encounter any profanity or explicit content throughout the book, which was greatly appreciated. There are some graphic details regarding killings, however I doubt that this would come as a surprise to anyone, given the title of the book. That being said, sensitive readers would not appreciate the at times, violent content. Anyone who enjoys an intelligently written, fast-paced action would definitely enjoy this offering.
My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. There is not one thing I can say I disliked. The characters were believable, the storyline gripping, and in fact, quite educational. I found only two grammatical errors which were entirely negligible. I thus concluded that the editing was professionally done, which I sincerely admire in a book. I will most certainly be on the lookout for more of Mr. Doucette's work.
