Review by Fola_M -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
What do you get when you mix up a mysterious elite club shrouded in secrecy, a psychotic killer, a trail of dead bodies and the best detectives Northern Ireland can offer? An intriguing and thrilling crime fiction novel, that’s what. Yes, indeed the book,The Dark Web Murders by Brian O Hare is one of the most engrossing crime novels I’ve read in a long time.
A prominent judge is found dead and the police, led by Detective Chief Inspector Sheehan, is horrified by the brutality of the crime. Two more horrific deaths follow with the same modus operandi so it appears that a serial killer is on the loose. Brazen by the fact that he hasn’t been caught, the murderer appears to taunt the police as he delves into the Dark Web, the sinister section of the internet that is deliberately hidden from search engines, to brag about his dastardly exploits.
Investigations reveal that the late judge was a member of a secret society who indulges in sickening and depraved acts. The killer, now getting sloppy, drops a cryptic clue on the Dark Web about his last victim and Sheehan and his team race against time to figure out who he is. Will they catch the killer on time before he strikes again or will it be too late?
What I love about The Dark Web Murders is the way all the principal characters are explained at the beginning so one can really identify with all the different personae. The character of Detective Stewart stands out as a pretty but brainy and resourceful officer who is determined not to let her gender or her partner get in the way of her work. The book is professionally well-edited and has a few negligible errors and some use of profanity. The plot is very easy to read and follow as a separate story even though this is part of a series by the same author.
I also love how it describes in great detail, the seediest part of the society and how the rich and the powerful use their influence to manipulate the law and to commit perverted atrocities. It also exposes the part of the internet that is used for illegal and forbidden activities and hidden from public glare.
The only thing I don’t like is the fact the pages aren’t numbered. However, the fact that there’s a table of content with links makes up for this error, so I could easily pick up from where I stopped or go back and forth between the chapters.
I would recommend this book to only a mature audience as it contains depictions of a sexual and violent nature. I wouldn’t recommend it to children, teenagers or even adult readers whose sensibilities are easily offended. If you are a lover of the mystery and crime literary genre and doesn’t mind reading about the dark side of human nature, you will love this book. Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 for being such a captivating and informative read.
