Review by writestuff -- Demon Freaks
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R.Hardison is a well-rounded tale of horror, humor and adventure. Ron and Bing Slaughter (first clue right there),find themselves stressed out after hearing that the SATs are drawing closer. They decide that since their teacher seems to have it in for them, they should have a study session at a friend Meat's cabin. This sets in motion an unbelievable adventure that has them wishing the tests were their biggest problem.
Little time is wasted in this book as the stage is quickly set and we start the action at the cabin. Four friends try their best to study hard for the next day's tests. The all important SATs loom ahead of them. If they don't do well, they are doomed to a life of flipping burgers. All is going well until a strange, hooded figure is seen near the cabin. What happens next is a hilarious horror story. Their studies are cut short by a crazy storm, a more crazy history teacher and a possessed dagger. From there things just get freakish with a corporation wanting to summon a demon with sacrifice and many dangers they all must face. They discover their strength and that their burger-making parents might be a little more interesting then they thought.
It's a rare gem to read a horror that makes you legitimately laugh out loud. The story may be written for young adults, but I really enjoyed this book as an adult. I appreciated that the writer didn't write down to the younger audience. There are no plot holes and everything ties nicely into each other. The characters are well made and development during the story is well noted.
I rate this spooky delight 4 out of 4 stars. The editing is smartly done and a pleasure to read. The chapters are introduced in a cool way. I would read more books like this for sure. Some time is spent setting the tone and background for the main characters. This just enriches the story and isn't endless pages of teen drama. Almost immediately the action starts and just doesn't end.
I recommend this read to fans of humor and horror, they don't always mix, but here its just fantastic. It's written for a younger audience, but I think any adult will find this book as thrilling as teens would, its just that good. The characters develop in a realistic and satisfying way that shows the thought and true skill that went into this book.
