Review by swims1215 -- An Imperfect Crime by Fred G. Baker
In An Imperfect Crime by Fred G. Baker, two best friends, and struggling novelists, Peter and Allister want to get their books published. So they come up with a crazy scheme to commit a murder without a body. The supposed victim would come into the courtroom at the trial unharmed. A year later, Peter is on death row for the murder of Allister and visited by a priest, Father Guillermo Montero. Peter was adamant that he was innocent and told Father Montero about the scheme and gave him a book he wrote about how they planned everything. But Allister didn’t show up at the trial and Peter lost contact with him. Peter knew something must have happened to Allister. After Peter’s execution, Father Montero set out with Detective Lori Sanchez, one of the detectives that were on the case, to find out the truth.
What I liked the most about this book was the idea of a priest working with the police to solve a fake murder. The priest believed the accused was innocent and wanted to find the truth. I’ve never read a book where friends get together and plan a perfect murder without a body. That really piqued my curiosity.
What I disliked most was I felt like I wasn’t satisfied with the ending. Even though it ended and can be read as a standalone, I felt short-changed with the outcome. I also felt that the perfect murder scheme was put on the back burner when I thought it would be the center of the story. There is a mention of rape and the language was so vulgar that I was literally flinching trying to read through it.
I would rate this book 2 out of 4. I felt the story line kind of got lost the further I went along and it got boring. So, sometimes it would be hard to keep reading. Then, it would pick up and be action-packed and I would be interested again. Especially with the twists, you didn’t know what was about to happen next.
I think this book would be most suitable for a mature adult. There was a part in this book that the language got so vulgar that I was cringing and couldn’t wait to get past it. But, this book kind of had it all, the gangs, drugs, guns, and of course, police chases. If that is what you look for in a book, then I think you will be well pleased.
