[Following is a volunteer review of "East Wind, 2nd edition" by Jack Winnick.]
East Wind by Jack Winnick is a story that could very well be the headlines of tonight's news. With the terrorist attacks over the last couple of decades still fresh in our minds, Mr. Minnick has crafted a story that is both timely and frightening. The chronology of this book crosses back and forth through time, from one country to another,weaving a story that has past history impacting current times.
A dirty bomb detonates at Santa Monica Bay, destroying buildings and shattering people's lives. Laura Edmonds, an FBI special agent is assigned to root out and identify those responsible for the bombs. Laura has an uncanny ability to decipher codes. She is soon partnered with Uri Levin,a member of a top-secret Israeli group known only as Kidon. Laura and Uri discover a website that appears to be posting college homework assignments at engineering schools across the United States. But its implications are much more sinister.
Fighting against the efforts of the American government are Walid and Hossein. Sixteen year old Walid has been mesmerized by the teachings of Hezbollah leaders. Walid envisions himself as a martyr, someone who would be known as "Walid the Magnificent". He is sent to the United States as a university student, infiltrating himself into American society. Hossein, an unassuming fisherman from a small town in Alabama is actually the head of Hezbollah in America. The two enter into an unholy alliance.
An ultimatum is sent to the United States government, demanding that either the United States cease supplying any aid to Israel or more bombs will be detonated, one per week. The United States has just five days to respond to this missive. As the United States does not negotiate with terrorists, this produces more anxiety within the government. Conflicting agencies follow their own agendas, giving the terrorists a "heads-up".
The only downside to this book is that there is a lot of background history about the tension between the Arab nations and Israel in the first half of the book. The sheer volume of information may cause one's attention to stray. However, to fully understand the significance of the later action, the reader is urged to pay attention to this history to better understand each character's viewpoint. The second half of the book plunges the reader into a stomach-churning chase to get to the villains before they can carry out their evil plots. This half is spellbinding and the reader is unaware of what will happen until the last few pages. Hang on for the unexpected twists and turns at the end of the book.
