Review by Kajori50 -- Murdered by James Schannep
In the interactive novel Murdered, it is the reader who is the protagonist. The story is set during the festive time of the Carnaval held in Rio de Janeiro. Hours after landing in Rio de Janeiro, the protagonist comes across a grisly murder scene with a note near the dead body. He also happens to find a gun. From here onwards, the reader gets to choose the course of the story.
Murdered is a very unique murder mystery. It is like those interactive novels that completely engages the reader. The reader feels that he or she is the one who is responsible for solving the mystery. One wrong move on his or her part and the mystery remains unsolved. The reader's decisions can lead to over fifty endings. If he or she is not satisfied, then he or she can easily reset the story or go back to the previous chapter. I believe the different endings made the book all the more interesting. It is worth mentioning that the book has three distinct storylines. These storylines are quite different from one another. Hence, this adds a unique diversity to the book.
The best part of the novel is its well-structured nature. Most of the chapters end with a few choices. When the reader clicks on a choice, he or she is taken to the concerned chapter. Also, there is a list of chapters at the end of the book. I believe this makes the reading hassle-free.
I have to say that the book is quite well-written. The second person narrative truly makes the reader feel like the protagonist. Also, I believe that the book was pretty well-edited. I only found a few minor errors. These errors did not affect my reading experience.
Keeping in mind the pros and cons, I rate James Schanepp's Murdered4 out of 4 stars. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. There was nothing that I did not like about it. It was fun to solve the murder mystery. I would definitely give the other books in the series a try. I recommend this book to fans of murder mysteries and interactive novels.
