My favourite is Kalayla. I initially didn't like her much. But later I loved her strength, her way of not mincing her words, and her internal monologue. She was a very relatable character at times. And the concept of a 11 year old challenging grown ups as if on equal grounds is very visually amusing for me

Lena all the way for me. I like her open mind, level of tolerance, and spirit of always being willing to help at all times. I also like the motherly role she played to both Kalayla and Maureen.

I would have to say Maureen was my favourite character. I really did like Kalayla as well as Lena, but I found myself gravitating toward Maureen. She showed great character development starting the novel as a meek, unconfident mother and ended strong with ‘sharp teeth’ with lots of confidence. Her character has been through so much and has had to make some challenging decisions in her life, but ultimately wants what’s best for her child. Something I can relate to.

Lena without a doubt! I was drawn to her because of how she looked after and supported Kalayla since I didn't have that growing up. She was hilarious and I loved her spunk.

Although Kalayla is a clear favourite on this forum, I found my vote in favour of Maureen. A young single mother, struggling and making sacrifices. Her nature just appeals to me. I found her endearing.

Obviously Kalayla is the star character of the book and she was my favourite. Lena also ranked second in my opinion.

This is clearly a popular opinion, but my favourite character too was Kalayla. Her character was smart, savvy and sarcastic while also maintaining a certain level of childishness. She loved her mother and Lena in her own way. She was not only the titular character but also the one around whom the story revolved. I adored her.

I can't choose between Kalayla and Lena. Their characters developed into kinder versions of themselves. Kalayla's growth was touching and the small changes in her has my heart. However, after all that Lena went through, she never let her become a bitter person and did not shy away from accepting she could be wrong about her sons. She became braver by the end of the story.

My favorite character was Kalayla, seeing her develop from a stubborn, reckless girl to a mature and dependable girl was amazing.

Obviously, it is Kalayla. This young lady was really cut out for her rolebin this book. I loved how she was able to bring all the other characters down to her own way of thinking. Also not to forget her overall influence.

My favorite character was also Kalayla. Despite her circumstances, she was always full of life. I also love how much she cared for the people she loved.

My favorite character is Lena. She genuinely cares for Kalayla and finds ways to help her without being too pushy. In my book she did find redemption by helping Kalayla.

Kalayla is the one character in the book that makes me laugh because of her smart mouth. And though she's young she thinks older than her age mates. So for that, she is my favorite character in the book.

I really like Kalayla because she was so mature, even though she was young. But I also liked Lena because she was wise, even though her past was really surprised me.

Lena is my favorite character. I like how she tried to help a teenager even when she has been stuck in her shell since her twins death. I also like how she wasn't forceful or even trying to take Mauren's place from her child's life. I like how she doesn't stop to seek counsel from her friend when she sees that she couldn't handle things on her own. I like how she embraced change.
