Review of Where Shadows Dwell
An inscription on a medallion obtained from a boss demon by Lisa Parks, the Demon Hunter, sparks curiosity, fear, and a resolve to resist all demonic agents. The inscription points to a plan and map that will release billions of demons into the world, and the World Gifted Convocation holds a meeting to draft a reprisal attack where possible. Lisa Parks, married to a pastor and her Paladin, Jason Parks, is the leader of her convocation, a company of five Gifted and their Paladins. She finds strength to push forward from her husband, who stands by her through thick and thin. And so, they are tasked with locating the abyss on the map inscribed on the medallion, whose doors are to open, releasing billions of unrestrained demons into the world.
While fighting to save the world, Lisa struggles with personal battles: an unborn child on the way, a secret that has created tension between her and her husband, and the challenge of leading a team that includes a member opposed to her leadership. However, she is unrelenting and doesn't let her personal battles stop her from leading the team effectively. The Gifted are women with special powers from God, and their husbands/paladins are tasked with supporting their missions by fighting alongside them.
The book also has a balanced blend of themes: romance, survival, leadership, grief, envy, etc. The theme of leadership teaches that effective leadership doesn't connote perfection, but that putting the interests of its members first should be every leader's priority. I say this because despite the opposition to her leadership from a member, it didn't deter Lisa from fulfilling her responsibilities to the best of her ability. She led with grace and empathy, showing great care for her team members. Another striking theme is romance; it shows how much is possible when the right person is supporting you. I enjoyed the humor incorporated into the plot; it eased the tension, lightened the mood during grave moments, and cracked me up at times.
I disliked nothing about the book, except that the plot has some loose ends, which I believe can be settled with a sequel. I also found some errors while reading, and therefore, I rate this book four out of five stars. A star was deducted because of the reservation I mentioned above and the significant number of errors I found while reading. And so, I recommend this book to fans of action-thriller, sci-fi, and romance novels because it has all three genres.
